The History of Street Dance
Before we discuss the specific classes we offer, we believe that it is important to understand the history of street dancing and how it has developed into the art form we see today.
Street dance is a relatively new form of dancing which originated in the UK. It is a mix of different styles of dancing including hip hop, breakdance and disco. Street dancing is often performed in public places such as parks, streets and clubs.
First Examples
Street dance first started to become popular in the UK in the late 1970s and early 1980s. At this time, there was a growing interest in hip-hop music and culture from the US. This led to the development of breakdancing, which became the most popular form of street dancing at that time.
Breakdancing quickly spread to other countries around the world, including the UK. In the UK, breakdancing became known as ‘body popping’. Body poppers would often compete against each other in public places such as parks and street corners.
The popularity of body popping began to decline in the late 1980s, but street dance remained popular. In the 1990s, a new style of street dancing called ‘garage’ emerged. This was a mix of different styles of music including house, R&B and hip hop. Today, street dancing is still popular and continues to evolve.
Contunuing its Evolution
Street dance is a type of dancing that evolved outside of the traditional dance studio setting. It includes a variety of styles that developed independently in different parts of the world. Street dancing styles are often danced to pop, hip hop or electronic music and can be seen in music videos, movies, television shows and live performances.
The first street dances were likely created in the late 1800s or early 1900s. They were based on African American vernacular dances, such as tap, jazz and swing. These dances were usually done in informal settings, such as on street corners or in dance halls.
As time went on, different styles of street dance began to develop in different parts of the world. In the United States, street dancing styles such as breaking, popping and locking became popular in the 1970s. In Europe, styles such as vogueing and house dancing became popular in the 1980s. And in Japan, street dancing styles such as hip hop and jazz funk were popularised in the 1990s.
Today, street dancing is enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. It is a popular form of exercise and self-expression. The great part about street dancing is that it continues to evolve as new styles and trends emerge.
The History of Street Dancing in The UK
In the UK, street dance can be divided into two main categories: Northern street dancing and Southern street dancing. Northern street dancing includes styles such as breaking, popping and locking. Southern street dancing includes styles such as vogueing, house dancing and jazz-funk
There are also many other types of street dancing that have emerged in recent years, such as krumping, whacking and tutting.
